This effect is based on one by Brother John Hamman entitled "The Magic Cards" (The Secrets of Brother John Hamman by Richard Kaufman, Kaufman and Greenberg, 1989, pp 99-101). In the present effect, the spectator selects three cards randomly from the deck. They are placed face up on the table, side by side. The magician introduces three cards he calls the Magic Chameleons, showing only their backs, which are each different from the others as well as from the deck from whence the selected cards came. He drops the chameleon cards on top of the first selection and shows that the faces of all three chameleons match the first selection. He repeats the feat for the second and then the third selection. Each time the chameleons' faces change to match the selected card on which they've been placed. Next, he places one chameleon card face down on top of each face-up selection. When the chameleons are turned face up, each is shown to match its respective selection. Finally, the face-up chameleon/selection pairs are turned face down to reveal that now the backs of the pairs match as well! The deck is then spread face down to show its backs are different from all the other cards' backs.

Read what Austin, Texas magician Andy Martin had to say about the Magic Chameleons: "Ok so I have 20+ new tricks to add and 20+ books, but I have just added one. This beautiful effect by Paul Mims and Doug Gorman is really, really growing on me. I've performed it a few times and it kills! it requires one simple sleight and everything not only is clean at the end, but reset is almost automatic. Everything about this effect has been cleanly routined and with about an hour's practice you will have an incredible effect to perform for the rest of your life. This is already slated for my Christmas shows. Thank-you Paul and Doug for releasing such a wonderful effect!"You receive the necessary cards (six in number) and complete instructions with suggested patter. Provide your own deck and you are ready to go.
